How to Wash Modal Clothing: Prevent Shrinkage, Fading and Pilling
A gentle, practical care routine for modal clothing that helps preserve colour, softness, drape and shape.
Modal clothing is loved for its softness and fluid drape, but it benefits from gentle washing. Heat, friction and overloading the machine can affect colour, surface and shape. Always begin with the care label on the individual garment, then use the following routine when those instructions allow it.
Check colourfastness and close fastenings
Separate light and dark colours, especially for the first few washes. Turn the garment inside out, close any buttons or ties and remove jewellery or accessories that could catch the fabric. If you are unsure about colour, test a hidden area with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent.
Use cool water and a gentle detergent
Hand washing gives you the most control. Submerge the garment in cool water with a small amount of gentle detergent, move it lightly and avoid long soaking. If the care label permits machine washing, use a delicate cycle, a laundry bag and a small load.
Avoid bleach, harsh stain removers and excessive detergent. More product does not mean a better clean and can be harder to rinse from a soft fabric.
Reduce friction to help prevent pilling
Do not wash modal with towels, denim, hook-and-loop fasteners or rough items. Friction is one cause of surface fuzz and pilling. Turn printed garments inside out and keep the spin speed gentle if the machine settings allow it.

Reshape and dry away from strong heat
Do not wring the garment. Press out water gently, roll it in a clean towel and reshape it while damp. Dry flat or on a suitable hanger according to the care label, away from harsh direct sun. High dryer heat can encourage shrinkage and shorten the life of the fabric.
Steam lightly if needed, keeping the steamer moving. If ironing is permitted, use the temperature stated on the care label and iron inside out.
Store modal with room to breathe
Make sure the garment is completely dry before storing. Fold heavy pieces so they do not stretch on a hanger; hang lighter kimonos on a smooth, padded hanger if that suits the garment. Keep them away from rough surfaces and direct sunlight.
