Kaftan Care
How to Wash and Care for a Modal Kaftan Dress
How to hand wash, dry, steam, pack and store a silk-like modal kaftan while protecting its colour, soft drape and printed neckline.

A silk-like modal kaftan is soft, breathable and fluid, which is exactly why it benefits from gentle care. Strong heat, long soaking and rough washing can affect the drape, print and surface of the fabric. The care label on your own garment is always the authority; the steps below reflect the current care instructions for Claire Powell modal kaftans.
Prepare the kaftan before washing
Check the neckline, side seams and hem for marks or loose threads. Remove jewellery and anything sharp from the washing area. Wash the kaftan separately, especially the first few times, so another garment cannot transfer colour or catch the fabric.
If there is a localised mark, blot gently rather than scrubbing. Test any cleaning product on a hidden section and avoid bleach or harsh stain removers, which can change a printed colourway.
Use a cool, quick hand wash
Fill a clean basin with cool water and add a small amount of mild liquid detergent. Submerge the kaftan and move it gently through the water. Keep the wash brief: do not soak it for a long period, twist it or rub sections of the print together.
Rinse in cool water until the detergent is removed. Support the garment with both hands when lifting it because wet fabric is heavier and can stretch if held from one point.
Remove water without wringing
Let excess water drain, then lay the kaftan on a clean towel. Roll the towel gently and press to absorb moisture. Unroll it and reshape the V-neckline, side seams and curved hem while damp. Do not pull the fabric to force extra length or width.
Lay flat or hang to dry in the shade, following the garment label. Avoid a tumble dryer and strong direct sunlight. Heat can encourage shrinkage, while prolonged sun can affect vivid colours.
Steam or iron from the reverse
Many light packing creases relax after the kaftan hangs. If more help is needed, use gentle steam and keep the steamer moving. The current Claire Powell kaftan care guidance allows a warm iron on the reverse when needed; use a clean pressing cloth and do not press decorative-looking print detail from the front.

Pack and store it with room to breathe
For travel, fold or roll the kaftan loosely around other soft clothes. Keep it away from shoes, jewellery, zips and rough bag hardware. Hang it on arrival so the fabric can settle. For longer storage, make sure it is completely clean and dry and use a smooth padded hanger or a loose fold on a clean shelf.
Do not compress it beneath heavy clothing for months at a time. A breathable cover can protect the fabric while allowing air to circulate.
Protect the print while wearing it
Allow sunscreen, perfume and body lotion to dry before dressing. Be careful around textured handbags, rough chair edges and jewellery that could snag the surface. After beach or pool wear, do not leave the kaftan damp or bundled in a bag.
