What to Wear Under a Kaftan: Slips, Underwear and Easy Layers
A practical guide to slips, underwear, swimwear and lightweight layers under a kaftan dress for everyday, beach, travel and event wear.

What you wear under a kaftan depends on the fabric, the light and where you are going. A printed modal kaftan may feel comfortably covered indoors but become more revealing in strong backlight. A beach kaftan may be deliberately worn over swimwear, while an event outfit often benefits from a smooth slip. The goal is comfort and confidence, not adding unnecessary bulk.
Check the kaftan in natural light first
Try the kaftan near a window and then stand with the light behind you. Look at the front, side and back. Dark, detailed prints usually offer more visual coverage than pale areas, but every colourway behaves differently. A phone photograph can reveal transparency that is easy to miss in a mirror.
Also sit, walk and lift your arms. Fluid fabric changes position as you move, so an underlayer should stay comfortable without catching or creating a visible ridge.
Choose a slip for polished everyday or event wear
A lightweight slip is the simplest way to create even coverage under a midi kaftan dress. Choose a smooth fabric with a neckline that remains hidden beneath the kaftan’s V-neck. The slip should be shorter than the kaftan and loose enough that the outer fabric can continue to drape.
Nude tones are useful under light prints, but ‘nude’ means a shade close to your own skin rather than one universal beige. Under a deep blue or saturated print, a navy or tonal slip can also work. Test the combination in daylight before an event.
Keep underwear simple and low-contrast
Seamless underwear reduces visible lines beneath soft modal. A well-fitted bra with smooth cups is often less noticeable than lace or heavy seams. Match the undergarment to your skin tone or to the dominant colour in the kaftan, and avoid bright white under a light-coloured print because it can stand out in backlight.
If the neckline is roomy, check the bra straps and centre front when you bend or sit. A small fashion tape tab can help for a special occasion, but it should never pull or distort the kaftan neckline.
Wear swimwear underneath at the beach or pool
A kaftan is an easy cover-up over a one-piece swimsuit or bikini. Let the swimwear dry before leaving the garment on for a long period, and protect the print from chlorine, salt, sunscreen and rough pool surfaces. Rinse and care for both pieces according to their labels.
For a poolside lunch, add sandals and a small bag rather than another layer. The resort and cruise kaftan guide has more ways to move from water to dining without a complicated change.
Add pants only when the kaftan length calls for them
A mini kaftan top works naturally with pull-on pants, leggings or slim jeans. A midi kaftan dress is usually intended as the complete outer garment, although a very light cropped pant can be useful if you prefer extra coverage. Keep the lower layer clean and simple so it does not fight the kaftan’s curved hem.

Make the underlayer disappear into the outfit
The best underlayer supports the kaftan without becoming the focus. Check that it is breathable, smooth, secure through movement and easy to wash. For warm weather, avoid thick shapewear unless you genuinely find it comfortable; a light slip and well-fitted underwear often give a cleaner result.
