How to Care for a Silk Scarf: Washing, Drying and Storing (Without Ruining It)
Silk is a luxury fabric, but it doesn’t have to be high maintenance. With the right care, a silk scarf can stay vibrant and beautiful for years. Here’s a simple guide to washing, drying, ironing, and storing your silk scarf—so it keeps its drape and colour.
1) The safest option: dry clean
If you want the lowest-risk care method, professional dry cleaning is ideal—especially for printed silk.
2) If hand washing: keep it cold and gentle
Use cold water and a mild detergent. Avoid soaking for long periods. Gently move the scarf through the water—do not scrub.
3) Never wring silk
Wringing can damage fibres and distort shape. Instead, press out excess water gently using a clean towel.
4) Dry in shade
Lay flat or hang to dry away from direct sunlight. Sun can fade colours over time and heat can affect the fabric.
5) Ironing: low heat, reverse side
Use a low-heat iron on the reverse side. If needed, place a thin cloth between the iron and silk for extra protection.
6) Storage: keep it smooth and protected
Store folded neatly in a drawer or on a shelf away from rough surfaces that may snag. If you hang it, use a gentle scarf hanger and avoid sharp clips.
